How to Network Successfully

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

Networking is SO important in the professional world and it can be scary sometimes, but i’ve created a list of tips to help you conquer networking and grow your network!

1) Don’t be afraid to approach someone:

If you are interested in talking to someone, go up to them and do it! They are probably just as nervous as you, if not more so.

2) Ask the person to tell you about what they do:

People LOVE to talk about themselves and this can be a great way for you to feel more comfortable talking to them before talking about yourself.

3) Loosen up a bit:

Of course you want to be professional when speaking to future employers, but try to stay away from the robot sales pitch and be yourself.

4) Read the crowd:

You can network with people anywhere, and it's important to notice your environment and read the crowd around you in order for you to know how professional you should be. For example, if you are at a large networking event, you should dress nice and have resumes to hand out. However, if you meet someone at a coffee shop it is more informal and you may casually talk and exchange Linkedin profiles.

5) Collect business cards:

Collect as many business cards as possible. It's hard to remember everyone's names and occupations, especially if you're at a large event. By collecting business cards you can remember who you spoke to and will have a way to contact them in the future.

6) Send a follow up e-mail:

Always send a follow up email after your discussion to show your interest in the company, and it's a nice gesture!

The only way to get good at networking is to practice. Try to attend as many networking events as possible. The more you interact with other professionals and perfect your elevator pitch, the easier it will become.
