Finding Time for Yourself

Updated: Nov 8, 2019

As a college student, it can be difficult to balance clubs, school, interning, work and a social life. It's important to check in with yourself and make sure you are balancing everything, as well as balancing your health both physically and mentally. I've come up with a list of things that help me de-stress during my busy life and I hope they help you too!

I Just started practicing meditation this week and I really enjoy it. I meditate right when I wake up to set good intentions for the day. There are so many great meditation playlists and podcasts on Spotify that I use and I've heard the Calm app is good too. I've been doing some guided meditations as well as just listening to calming music. Meditation allows you to sit and clear your head of all thoughts, even if it's just for a short time. Whenever you are stressed or feel trapped, take a few moments to take deep breaths and take a break from what you were doing. It will help you to get back on track.

Journaling is a great way to get your thoughts onto paper. Some days I write about my day and what I did and other days I write lists. I love planning and staying organized, so lists help me keep all my thoughts together. Your journal is whatever you want it to be and you can write whatever makes you feel good. It's also fun to pick out a new journal, Marshalls has so many options!

Find a Hobby

It's time to put down your phone and find a hobby. Yes, scrolling through social media for hours can be fun and entertaining, but it can also be draining and mess with your mental state. Think about all the time you spend on your phone everyday (if you don't know, your phone settings will tell you and it's shocking) and take the time to take up a hobby you enjoy. I like reading and i've been trying to do it more, so I make time for it before I go to bed and I am also trying pursuing my interest in photography.

I often find myself sitting very tense and it hurts my shoulders, so yoga helps relieve the tension in my body and helps me relax. It’s a great way to take your mind off things and be calm. I don't know too much about yoga at the moment, but one of my goals for the winter is to expand my knowledge on the practice, so i'll keep you posted!

Treat yourself to a Face Mask or a Giant Bowl of Ice Cream

I love face masks because I am clearing my skin of toxins and it makes me feel refreshed. Some of my favorites are FarmHouse Fresh Splendid Dirt with Pumpkin Puree and Sundae Best Chocolate Softening Face Mask. Face masks are great, but sometimes you need to indulge in a bowl of ice cream (with sprinkles of course) to de-stress and make yourself feel better after a long, hard day.

I hope these tips are helpful and that you allow some time to focus on yourself each day. I'm going to get some ice cream now and I hope you do the same!
